Short Biography
Nancy Pike PhD, RN, CPNP-AC/PC, FAHA, FAAN, is Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the University of California, Irvine, Sue and Bill Gross School of Nursing. She continues to practice clinically as a nurse practitioner in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She has received numerous accolades as a researcher, teacher, mentor, and clinician. Her biobehavioral and neuroimaging program of research has received several NIH/NINR/NIND-funded grants to study structural brain injury, cerebral blood flow, and its correlations to cognitive and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents and young adults with congenital heart disease (CHD), in particular, single ventricle heart disease (SVHD). She is the first to use an innovative computer-based cognitive intervention to improve working memory/attention in adolescents with SVHD. Furthermore, she validated a cognitive screening tool used in adolescents and adults in cardiology clinics across the country and is currently developing a disease-specific measure for self-care in CHD to use with transitioning to adulthood. Her findings have affected clinical practice to reduce or mitigate neurocognitive injury and standards of care for cognitive screening across the lifespan on a local national and international level. She is a fellow in the American Heart Association, the American Academy of Nursing, and the STTI International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. She is the current Chair of the American Heart Association Council of Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing.
