Research Abstract
Richard Arum is conducting research in the sociology of education drawing on the fields of social stratification and sociology of organizations. His work is primarily focused on directing a large interdisciplinary research initiative, the UCI-MUST (Measuring Undergraduate Success Trajectories) Project. The UCI-MUST Project is integrating unprecedented data on undergraduate experiences, trajectories and outcomes to improve understanding of higher education, inform institutional improvement efforts, and advance educational equity. UCI-MUST efforts have focused on a diverse range of issues including: improving college-to-career transitions, fostering intellectual virtues, measuring the effectiveness of liberal arts education, and evaluation of student development in UCI's prison education program. Arum is also involved in a set of community-based research efforts focused on workforce development, improving services to foster and housing insecure youth, assessing effectiveness of educational innovations, and supporting a statewide environmental climate change literacy project (ECCLPS) that brings together the University of California system, the California State University system and community non-profit organizations to better prepare youth to understand and respond to increasing environmental challenges confronting our planet.
