Research Abstract
Since 1993 my laboratory has investigated mammalian reproduction, development and homeostasis, using the mouse as a model genetic system. These studies have contributed to our understanding of mechanisms of germline development, skeletogenesis, behavior, apoptosis, post-translational modification of microtubules, mitochondrial genetics and biology, and most recently, Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).
Our ongoing research interests are in three areas, each of which involves collaborations. First, we are investigating the function of the novel FNDC3 family of proteins in animal reproduction, development, and homeostasis. Second, we participate in MODEL-AD, a NIA/NIH-funded open-science project to develop and characterize new strains of genetically modified mice that can be used to investigate mechanisms of common forms of Alzheimer’s Disease and which can be used to test potential therapeutics. Third, we participate in a collaboratory project between UCI and Cal Tech whose goal is to understand the impact of genetic variation on gene expression and chromatin structure at the single cell level that ultimately comprises the genetic contribution to the phenotypes of different mouse strains.
