Academic Distinctions
Dr. Carl Schultz is an internationally recognized expert in the field of Disaster Medicine. He is a professor of emergency medicine at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, Director of the EMS and Disaster Medical Sciences Fellowship, Director of Research at the Center for Disaster Medical Sciences, and Director of Disaster Medical Services for the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine Medical Center.
He graduated AOA from the UC Irvine School of Medicine in 1978. He is residency trained and board certified in internal medicine and emergency medicine.
His area of expertise is disaster medicine, including all forms of weapons of mass destruction. His research interests include preparation and response to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, as well as weapons of mass destruction. He has over 80 publications in the field of disaster medicine, including two first-author articles in the New England Journal of Medicine. His research has been funded by multiple agencies including the National Science Foundation. He has international faculty appointments at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium and the University of Piemonte in Italy and is part of the international faculty for the European Master of Disaster Medicine.
He served as a consultant under contract to the Department of Defense as an expert in the medical aspects of nuclear, biologic, and chemical terrorism for the Domestic Preparedness Program. He has also been retained as a consultant by other national and international groups. The ANSER Institute for Homeland Security asked him to advice on the impacts of terrorism on public health. The State of Israel has used him as a consultant to update their urban search and rescue team on the management of earthquake victims and he has assisted their Ministry of Health on issues related to the impact of earthquakes on hospitals.
He is also co-editor for the definitive reference on disaster medicine published by Cambridge University Press and first author on two disaster medicine chapters in Rosen’s Textbook of Emergency Medicine, which is the premiere textbook for emergency physicians in the U.S. He served on several national emergency medical society task forces on terrorism. He is the only emergency physician in the United States to serve on the terrorism task forces for both the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He chaired the Disaster Committee for the American College of Emergency Physicians for two years. He lectures nationally and internationally on disaster medicine related topics. In 2015, he received the American College of Emergency Physicians National Disaster Medical Sciences Award.
