Research Abstract
I published a book entitled El contrabando de lo secreto: la escritura de la historia en El carnero (Editorial Cuarto Propio, 2004). El carnero is a XVIIth century chronicle on the first one hundred years of the Nuevo Reino de Granada, written by Juan Rodríguez Freile. The chronicle is one of the most important and unique texts of the Latin American Colonial period. It marks a crucial development: from the chronicles of conquest and discovery, to the writing of a colonial subject, confronting the social and administrative realities of the new territories. This singular change entails fundamental reconfigurations in the perception of topography, individuals, and the community as a whole, and the way they are represented in narrative. The writing of history confronts these issues by articulating different discursive practices that, in their desire to unite experience with the cultural archive, transform language and meanings in new and unexpected ways. In my most recent research, I have published several articles on Puerto Rican literature, on authors such as Eduardo Lalo and Luis Negrón.
With regards to teaching, I have had the opportunity to offer a wide variety of literature and culture courses. I have taught Colonial Latin American literature, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican literature in the islands and in the United States, contemporary Latin American literature, critical theory courses, and culture of the Hispanic Caribbean.
