Research Abstract
Lawrence C. Chao, M.D. is Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the College of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine.


Dr. Chao was born and raised in Ohio and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1993 as a Dean's Scholar.


After completing an internship in internal medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, Dr. Chao went to New York City to train in Ophthalmology. He completed his residency training at St. Vincent's Medical Center. Due to a special interest in corneal surgery, Dr. Chao also completed subspecialty fellowship training in corneal and refractive surgery at the University of California, Irvine.


He is a full time faculty member at UC Irvine and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery.


Dr. Chao specializes in anterior segment surgery, including surgery for cataracts and corneal disorders. He is experienced in refractive surgical procedures such as PRK (phototherapeutic keratectomy) and LASIK (laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis) surgery for the correction of nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness.
