Dr. Cho is currently working in MR imaging of the susceptibility effect, which is useful for the functional imaging of the brain. His new functional imaging technique using the susceptibility effect enhanced method uniquely visualizes the susceptibility effect alone without mixing with other effects such as the inflow effect of arterial blood. In addition to the susceptibility effect study of the brain, he is interested in NMR microscopy for the study of microscopic biological samples, such as the Xenopus Laevis. NMR microscopy allows us to examine many biological samples in vivo, that is without destroying them and permits us to observe them while they are growing. The resolution of such a microscope now can reach as high as 4-5 micron fwhm. Dr. Cho is also interested in developing 3-D image reconstruction algorithms for PET (Positron Emission Tomograph). His original TTR (True Three Dimensional Reconstruction) algorithm is one of the algorithms widely used in the field and is now extended to the real machine, such as the one at UCI Brain Imaging Center. When this algorithm is applied to the UCI PET, it will improve the sensitivity as well as the resolution, pushing the limit of the PET to its highest possible capability.
