Research Abstract
Dr. Filipek's primary clinical and research interests focus on the neurobiology and genetics of autism. She is the Co-Director of the UC Irvine Autism Research Project, and is directly involved in this research into specific autistic phenotypes, including autistic regression, familial recurrence, sibling risk factors, and the association of anomalies on chromosome 15q and autism.
Dr. Filipek is the Chair of the American Academy of Neurology/ Child Neurology Society Committee to develop Practice Parameters on Screening and Diagnosis, and Treatment, of Autism. In addition, she serves on the National Academy of Science Committee on Educational Interventions for Autistic Children.
Dr. Filipek has also developed a method of using specifically-adapted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate developmental brain anomalies of size (volume) in the developmental disorders, primarily autism, learning disabilities and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Semi-automated computer algorithms are used to positionally normalize and segment the brain for full morphometric analysis of whole brain, individual substructures and (functional) cortical parcellation units. The ultimate goal of this research is to combine this structural morphometric analysis with functional MRI (fMRI) studies for a more complete evaluation of the brain in the developmental disorders of childhood.
Patents:
Kennedy DN, Filipek PA, Caviness VS. Morphometric Analysis of Anatomic Tomographic Data. U.S. Patent 4,961,425: 1990.
Kennedy DN, Filipek PA, Caviness VS. Morphometric Analysis of Anatomic Tomographic Data. U.S. Patent 5,185,809: 1993.
