Professor Feldstein is a nationally recognized authority on the economics of health care.

Professor Feldstein's current research interests are on the reasons for the rapid increase in health insurance premiums and an examination of the effect of insurance company cost-containment programs, such as utilization review, on health insurance premiums and employee use of services. Previous research projects have been on the demand for medical care, hospital economies of scale, and construction of an econometric model of the dental sector. His book Health Care Economics 6th ed. (2004) is one of the most widely used texts on health economics. His book on The Politics of Health Legislation uses economic analysis to explain the outcome of health legislation in terms of the interest groups affected. His book Health Policy Issues, written for non-economists, examines current health care issues and their policy applications. He has been a consultant to many government and private health agencies as well as serving on the board of directors of both non-profit and for profit hospital systems, Sutter Health and Province HealthCare, as well as Odyssey HealthCare, a hospice company.
