Research Abstract
Dr. Wing's areas of research include the physiology of human labor and delivery, focusing on cervical ripening and labor induction. Her clinical research trials have been conducted in both inpatient and outpatient settings and have used chemical and mechanical approaches. This research focus is timely in today's healthcare environment, addressing cost-effectiveness and innovation in antepartum/intrapartum care. She is considered a national, if not international, expert in the use of the agent known as misoprostol, for cervical ripening and labor induction in term pregnancies. She was the driving force in the research efforts that defined the "standard of care" in which the amount and dosing regimen were concluded.

Dr. Wing is currently participating in other projects evaluating differing approaches to cervical ripening and labor induction, including the use of an anti-progestational agent known as mifepristone and other approaches to the use of misoprostol for the same purpose. While known as an effective abortifacent, Dr. Wing has hypothesized that mifepristone will also be effective as an agent for cervical ripening and labor induction at term, which, if proven, will be a suitable oral agent for an outpatient approach.

Another research focus looks at different facets of urinary tract infection in pregnancy and the effects of these infections on newborns, she has conducted trials comparing outpatient to inpatient therapy for acute pyelonephritis in pregnancy, and other trials comparing the efficacy of differing antibiotics for upper urinary tract infection in pregnancy. Future investigation in this area will look at short-course therapies for uncomplicated urinary tract infections during pregnancy and preventative alternative medicine approaches.
